Virginia has an extensive broadband coverage of 89 percent and is the 22nd most connected state in the country. Virginia has one of the top average internet speeds of 50.9 Mbps. However, the state still has 15 percent of undeserved population. This low connectivity in some sections is increasing as wired internet has witnessed high level of growth from 2011 onwards. The 180 internet providers operating in the state aid this internet connectivity.
Wired broadband of 25 Mbps speeds has the largest coverage in terms of broadband speeds with 90.2 percent. The other clear majority in coverage is taken by the wireline service that has 95.8 percent coverage among the Virginians. One-gigabit broadband however falls behind coverage in the state with only a meager 1.7 percent, while fiber optic takes the lead with 48.2 percent coverage.
With 86.9 percent coverage, 100 Mbps broadband is yet another service with good penetration in Virginia. In spite of this, 866,000 people in the state are still limited to a single provider and does not have any switching options. This is comparable to the 824,000 people without access to 25 Mbps wired broadband connections.
